Purpurea glycosides A and B are primary glycosides which upon
hydrolysis yield their corresponding secondary glycosides digitoxin and
gitoxin, respectively in addition to a glucose molecule. Further hydrolysis
of the secondary glycosides yields the corresponding aglycone and 3
digitoxose molecules.
Comparing digoxin and digitoxin:
Digoxin
• The most widely used of the cardiotonic glycosides, and it is obtained
from the leaves of D. lanata.
• It is a highly potent drug and should be handled with exceptional care.
• Tablets are up to 70% absorbed.
