BARISTA SKILLS
TRAINING THRIVES
Something’s Brewing spoke with
Lorna McCandlish who is Regional
Manager and Barista Trainer at Miko
Scotland and it is easy to understand
how Lorna has established a thriving
Barista Skills training centre at Miko
Scotland’s office in College Milton, East
Kilbride.
Since joining the Beverage Standards
Association barista skills training
programme in early 2017, the
development of regular training courses
has increased year after year. However,
COVID brought the process to a stop,
however, this did not stop Lorna from
looking at ways to continue helping
schools in the Ayrshire area work
towards teaching 16- to 17-year-old
pupils the skills for finding a job in the
hospitality workplace.
Lorna says, “The hospitality industry is
looking for young people who have had
training and developed skills for this “The hospitality industry is
sector. Through our training centre and looking for young people who
working with The Developing Young
Workforce Ayrshire and Chamber of have had training and
Commerce Miko Scotland is putting developed skills for this sector.” NOVEMBER/DECEMBER. 2023 | ISSUE 33
through over 75 candidates a year on the
BSA’s Level 1 Barista skills course. This
will then progress to approx. 50
candidates are being put through the City
& Guilds Barista Skills Level 2.”
