Page 208 - MY STORY
P. 208
I’ve always looked at this effort as part of a growing
experience for my reports and me. We made a significant
profit on this fixed price development program for the
first time in company history. This small crew had taken
on a job that was well beyond what any of us were trained
to do, generated about seven million dollars of revenue,
and performed magnificently. Ultimately, the missile
system program was canceled by the DoD, but we sure
learned a lot and made money doing it.
SEEK PERMISSION OR BEG FORGIVENESS?
I’ve already told you about Building 101D, our secure
building within a building. One of the rooms was very
large. Try to envision a room with 30’ high ceiling and
four walls that did not meet at right angles. The room was
sort of trapezoidal in shape with the large edge of the
trapezoid at the far end of the 100’ deep room. This room
was to be our compact RADAR range, where we could
measure our “targets” with high accuracy. Targets could
be large material samples or things shaped like missiles.
OK – So we had the room, but it was sort of an empty
shell.
