capabilities. He had enough composure to ask – “OK Ben,
what do I have to do to get a rating of exceeds
expectations.” My thought process immediately shifted
to things like “walk on water, or raise the dead” but
frankly, all I could do was to look like a “deer in the
headlights” and I don’t think I ever gave him a rational
answer to his question.
Lou had no concern getting a zero pay raise (he did not
get zero), he was just horrified at the stench of having to
live with a written record of “meeting expectations.”
Nothing I could say or do at that juncture seemed to help,
unless, of course, I changed our rating — which did not
occur.
FEW STORIES TO BE TOLD
There are few stories that can be told without getting into
trouble. From our formation of S/CSA in 1992 to my
retirement in 1997 a whole bunch of stuff happened that
cannot be discussed, and for that, I have no apology. It’s
just the way things were and still are.
