I also told him that his job was in no danger from me – I
would hold the job as director of S/CSA for him and
would likely consider retirement when he returned from
that assignment. He took over that program, was
successful, and became a VP in a couple of years.
JOINT AIR-TO-SURFACE-STANDOFF Missile (JASSM)
JASSM was the DoD’s follow-on to a previous tactical
cruise missile program that went “belly up” because it
was too expensive and had some major problems during
the engineering development phase. There were five
major aerospace companies competing for this new
system. In one key strategy meeting with MDA senior
executives (CEO on down), we were directed to use a
derivative of the McDonnell Douglas built US Navy
Standoff Land Attack Missile (SLAM) as our baseline
design.
