$250,000 to allow a small cadre of S/CSA experts to
design and validate a system that would meet customer
requirements, be affordable, and give us a chance of being
competitive, all within a three month window.
I had about five key people in my organization that might
be able to pull this off. The people chosen represented
design, propulsion, aerodynamics, operations analysis,
and electromagnetic (EM) analysis. In three months our
small group, with help from other team members,
generated a design, survivability data on a full-scale
model, wind tunnel data for aerodynamic and propulsion
performance, and defined manufacturing approaches for a
low-cost cruise missile.
Our design fits all the Navy and Air Force airborne launch
platforms and met all the DoD requirements for lethality,
range, and survivability. The SLAM derivative concept
was dropped, and our design became the baseline for the
proposal to DoD.
One main part of the proposal was a video presentation to
the JASSM “source selection” team in each of the critical
design areas. I presented the survivability portion
