Page 238 - MY STORY
P. 238
My argument for the job went something like this:
“I have a strong background in materials and structures,
and you have none. Most of your work is analytical and
deals with threat and survivability analyses. I think that
you might have some customers now or in the future that
would like to know how to design and build stuff and
measure it, and I can help do that. I expect no fringe,
vacation or medical benefits and will work for an hourly
rate plus actual expenses when you sign me up to support
a customer under contract. It’s sort of like keeping me in
a cage and then throwing me a chunk of meat, opening
the cage door, and you saying go get ‘em. What say
you?”
MTSI thought that was great, so I’ve been working as a
part-timer for MTSI since August of 1997 — about two
months after my retirement. My employee number is
00011, so you can see this was a pretty small organization
at the time I joined. I also told them that if I could not
provide measurable “value added” to their customer
community I would not accept the assignment. I have had
the pleasure of working with several companies in a
variety of assignments, and thoroughly enjoyed every
moment of those activities.
