Lockheed won and entered the initial design phase for the
JASSM program. We had beaten Hughes, Raytheon, and
General Dynamics.
When MDA re-constituted the JASSM organization to
perform the Design Definition study they kept the
existing manager, my nemesis G. Jim S thought I might
be helpful as G’s deputy, but G had other plans, so I kept
on at S/SCA until Alan returned from the internally
funded program (mentioned above), and I retired at the
end of July 1997. Unfortunately, MDA lost the
downselect to Lockheed at DoD milestone B to enter the
Engineering Development phase. This happened well
after my retirement and was very disappointing. G was
moved aside and eventually disappeared from view.
RETIRE! – WHAT NOW???
My retirement date was 31 July 1997 — the last day of
McDonnell Douglas’ existence before it became Boeing.
I made it clear that if, after 38 years with this company,
they wanted to hold my going away party in the cafeteria
during a work day -- I would not attend. Instead, Alan
worked up a farewell celebration and feast at his local
country club in Eureka. Attendance was good, even if it
cost $25 a body to attend -- a small measure of required
