P. 233
This in spite of the fact that:
1. JASSM was primarily in support of USAF needs, not
the Navy
2. The SLAM warhead was only 500 lbs., while JASSM
wanted a 1000 lb. concrete buster
3. SLAM range was insufficient
4. Autonomous guidance requirements were not
embedded in SLAM performance
5. The survivability requirements were substantially
different
6. A bunch of different other stuff. A few of us tried to
talk our leaders into considering a “clean sheet” design
that would have better performance characteristics and
was less expensive than SLAM, but were rebuked and
turned down summarily.
