The Smarts Scholars program at Roosevelt High School in collaboration with SUNY College at
Old Westbury enables students to accelerate their high school studies while earning college
credit.

     • Launched in fall 2010, Smart Scholars provides for credit-bearing college courses, most
of which are being offered in Roosevelt High School.

     • We believe that preparedness for college is something best developed over time,
therefore the recruitment and rigorous selection process begins in the 8th grade. Our
program calls for support services that extend into the middle school and, in some
cases, into the three elementary schools in the district.

     • Roosevelt High School Smart Scholars program is a recipient of Cohort 2 funding that
helps support the Early College High School initiative.

     • The Roosevelt Union Free School District has been named a District of Distinction by
the national publication District Administration, in recognition of the innovation and
success of our Smart Scholars program.

                                                College Tour Initiative

Through this initiative we expose our Smart Scholars to various college campuses to encourage
them to dive deeper into setting college and career goals. The SUNY Campus tour is offered
yearly and visits: SUNY- Albany, Binghamton, Cobleskill, Morrisville State College, and
Oneonta. Spring marks our Annual Historically Black Colleges and University Tour which visits
the campuses of: Hampton University, Howard University, Bowie State University, Virginia State
University, and The University of Maryland. Students are provided with the opportunity to
engage in conversation with current college students and advisors. Admissions interviews are
arranged with counselors to provide students who have applied with immediate admission
decisions.
