answer. As we got back to the wagon it was a little weird. It
was a moment of silence.
Pa said “Well, I think we made out pretty well. So, let’s
begin our journey home again, should we?” “Well, I suppose so.”
my Ma managed to stutter out. “Alright then.” he said. We then
got the oxen ready once again, loaded everybody on the wagon
and started back.
Mary, Ma, and I were all curious to find out what we had
made out with so Mary and I went up to Pa, who was steering
the wagon of course. Ma moved over towards him too.
“So Pa, could you tell us how much the gold was worth?” I
asked in a curious and calm voice. “Well, I won’t do that, but I
can tell you one thing.” he said. “What’s that?” Mary asked.
“Well come here girls,” he said waving to us over his shoulder,
“you might know we weren’t the wealthiest family in town, but
when you make it by and try to be the best person you can with
what you have, God might just reward you. And, our reward,
was very nice, and we thank Him.” “Ruff! Ruff!” Duke barked
sounding like he was agreeing with Pa.
My Pa, a strong, but nice person had never let me see him
cry, but this time I saw him get a little teary eyed, and I was just
happy to be headed home together.
