when my heart pounded the most. I was so nervous, but he
came back and we all hustled away.
After I couldn’t see them, I said “Hey Pa, what happened
back there?” “Oh, they weren’t that bad, but we still need to be
careful around them.” Pa responded. “What do you mean by
that?” I asked. “Well,” he seemed a little puzzled, but
remembered after a minute what he was going to say, “they
don’t believe is God, and are definitely not well mannered, but
they didn’t try to harm me.” “Oh.” I said thinking of what I
thought he might say, compared to what he did.
Anyway, we finally made it to the gold rush! It was so
crowded though. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people in
one place at once. It was breathtaking, but a little
overwhelming. Either way, I was excited to find some gold.
Ma and Mary stayed in the wagon while Pa and I headed
off to where a police officer was. I think he was helping people
who had just arrived and didn’t really have a sense of direction.
Anyway, I think he was very helpful to us.
Pa talked to the police officer for a minute, but I was
looking around. I just couldn’t believe we were there. Pa said
“Okay Laura, we’re probably going to stay off in the field a little
off there. So can you go tell Mary and Ma?” “Yes Pa.” I said
headed off to the wagon. As I was running I heard Pa thank
him, and trail behind me.
As I got to the wagon Ma saw the smile on my face and
said “You must be excited. But, please don’t get your hopes up.
Many people leave here without gold, that’s why your Pa and I
had to talk it over and consider it very well.” “I know, I know.” I
