Find a spare wall or gable end at home, preferably without a window!
Wall – Wall Ball, Hurley & Helmet;
§ Handpass – 1 metre from wall - handpass off wall, claw catch & repeat.
o Coach points – ensure knees are bent in athletic position, feet are active, stepping in on front foot for
pass, back out for catch and step in again etc.
§ Low Strike off stronger side – 4 metres from wall - Control with one touch & repeat
o Coach point – athletic position, catching hand low on the hurley, knees bent to be more dynamic in
getting the ball under control quicker
§ Low Strike off weaker side – 4 metres from wall - Control with one touch & repeat
o Coach points – athletic position, catching hand low on the hurley, knees bent to be more dynamic in
getting the ball under control quicker
§ Low Strike alternate sides – 4 metres from wall
o Coach points - ensure front foot alternates on left and right strike to ensure good balance, power and
accuracy. Again, ensure feet switch back out on controlling the sliotar as it comes back to you to allow
for best control and lateral (side to side) movement.
§ Medium Height Strike off stronger side – 3/4 metres from wall - Catch on return & repeat
o Coach points – athletic position, feet change from front foot out on strike (for power and balance) and
back to side to side for catch.
§ Medium Strike off weaker side – 3/4 metres from wall - Catch on return & repeat
o Coach points – same feet movement and watch for lazy front foot on weak side. Also, ensure you
practice full “C” swing on weak side remembering to bring hurley through at same speed and power
as the stronger side to enable improvement.
§ Medium Strike alternate sides – 3/4 metres from wall
o Coach points – concentrate on changing feet correctly for front foot strike and side by side on catching.
This will become natural after a while if practiced well and frequently. Remember, full “C” swing and
equal power/speed of strike on both sides.
§ Hop Strike off stronger side – 4/5 metres from wall, strike ball off the ground around ½ metre from wall and
react to control or catch on return & repeat
o Coach points – Feet change, low athletic position for return (on balls of feet, bent knees and ready
position grip) to give best chance of springing forward at the ball to control/catch and strike & repeat.
§ Hop Strike off weaker side – same as above, catch/control on return & repeat
o Coach points – Again watch for full swing and speed of strike on weak side
§ Hop Strike off alternate sides
o Coach Points – Engage feet, athletic position and weaker side swings while in full flow switching from
left to right sided strikes.
§ Long Strike and attack – Stand 20 metres back from the wall (or as far back as you can), strike the ball hard off
the wall and attack the return at full speed to catch/control, practicing how to approach a ball at full pace and
catching/controlling. Repeat ensuring to strike off both sides during this set to ensure your practicing getting
power into your weaker side strike.
§ If you have the space, you can alter this set by controlling the ball off the long strike driving towards the wall
for 4 steps, striking it and then turning to chase and get the ball under control as quickly as possible before
repeating the long strike and controlling and driving towards the wall again.
