Challenge Comparing Numbers
jOb ective Compare integers and natural numbers.

1. Textbook Instructions Challenge Comparing Numbers

Students have learned how to compare fractions Show students where negative integers are located on a number line. Negative integers get smaller as
the digits get larger while the positive integers get larger as the digits get larger.
and decimals. Here, they will compare integers.
You can use a number line to compare and order integers.
Use a number line to explain to students about
natural numbers
integers. Refer to .

Things to watch out for when comparing negative integers positive integers
integers:
A. The positive integers are bigger than zero, and Integers that are greater than 0 are called positive integers,
and integers that are less than 0 are called negative integers.
the negative integers are smaller than zero. 0 is neither a positive nor a negative integer.

C. Have them draw a number line to compare
negative integers. Tell them the value of the less greater
negative lategers increases when you move to
the right of the number line even though the
numbers decrease.

2. Build Understanding

Integers
Integers include positive integers, zero, and negative integers. Have them write positive integers on the right
side of zero and write negative integers on the left side of zero. Have them write positive signs on the
positive integers and negative signs on the negative integers.
Positive integers are often written without the positive sign “ ” so they are treated as natural numbers.
Zero does not only mean “nothing”, but it can be used to differentate positive and negative integers.
