A CREATING THE LEAD
The first sentence of your essay should grab your readers’ attention. This
important first sentence is called the LEAD. The LEAD sentence should
introduce the topic or main idea of your essay.
There are many ways of creating an effective LEAD sentence. You might
begin by:
• asking a question.
• stating a surprising fact.
EXAMPLE Look at the main idea and LEAD sentence below.
Main Idea: Soon, everyone will be able to travel to space.
Lead ➔ H ave you ever wanted to travel to space?
(This asks the reader an interesting question.)
