C ORGANIZING YOUR WRITING

Your writing should have

• MAIN IDEA — to tell readers what your topic is
• DETAILS — to tell more about your topic
• CONCLUSION — to give an ending to your topic

In other words, your sentences should be in the order of BEGINNING—
MIDDLE—END.

EXAMPLE MAIN IDEA
DETAILS
No other animal looks like a zebra! CONCLUSION
Each one has a different pattern of
black and white stripes.The stripes
confuse other animals.
The zebra is unique.

YOUR The first sentence is the MAIN IDEA. Underline the CONCLUSION.
TURN Circle the DETAILS.

Zebras have special groups.They
live together in large herds.They
also have smaller family groups:
one male, several females, and
the young. Zebras always know
which group they belong to.
