fire….downrange the scaffolds holding multiple forward-observers erupted in
balls of flames as the participants fell to the ground.
The artillery fire stopped. From my logistics vehicle, through my
high-powered binoculars, I was able to observe the results from Scott's
action. Scott, along with the assistance of Cunningham had torn the eyes out
of the enemy gun teams stationed somewhere out of sight, of whom surely
were packing up their guns or running for cover from the choppers now on-
station and hovering over Delta Company. Just another notch chalked up by
Delta 5 in the destruction of enemy targets threatening Delta Company, and
more were sure to come.
The choppers of Cunningham reported they were going to make a
forward sweep and take a look forward of the minefield and report.
Cunningham was also going to take a look-see and sweep the area one-half
mile forward of our next obstacle belt….the 2nd minefield. As Cunningham
blasted from Delta's position and disappeared over the horizon we could
hear more missiles launch from the choppers – obviously attacking more
enemy targets in the distance. No more than a few minutes passed, here
they came back rocketing over our position to return to cover Col Diggs’
approach. I was sure glad they were on our side.
The Commander of Task Force Cunningham hovers just feet above the ground in the center of
this photo. Fearless Cunningham offered invaluable air support.
