Next, use the Swedish fid to run the ⅜-inch (9 mm) strand located on the top
edge nearest the left corner through the horizontal strand. It should enter 6 inches
(150 mm) in from the selvage to create a 6-inch (150 mm) square.
Bend the horizontal piece around and insert the end through the vertical piece
(see art below). This does two things: it locks the two pieces together, and it
causes the directions of the two strands to change by 90 degrees. The vertical
strand makes a sharp L turn and will now run horizontal, to the right. The
horizontal strand takes a sharp turn and will now run vertical, downward (see art,
top 218).
