TWENTY-FIVE
               A Cargo Net

A cargo net is a handy item to have aboard. It allows the safe transfer of large,

bulky items from the dock or tender to the deck of a larger boat. The following
instructions are for a small but muscular cargo net. It measures 4 × 4 feet (1.2 ×
1.2 m) with 6-inch-square (150 sq mm) openings. It’s easy to stow and makes a
bundle small enough to carry under one arm or fit without much fuss in a dory or
tender; it will pay for its passage aboard larger ships. In the illustration, the laden
net is being hoisted aboard the schooner Ernestina via the anchor burton. On a
smaller boat, the net might hang from a block-and-tackle system made off to the
               boom.
