Oops: MNR map mistake creates more Lambton County wetlands
The rst wetland map
The revised wetland map
Heather Wright
So of cials started digging and soon found out the
map in the draft plan was
an error. Nywening says someone had been analysing aerial photos and designated the areas wetlands, but they had not been con rmed.
The Independent
A mistake by the Ministry of Natural Resources may end up easing some con- cerns about the Lambton County Draft Of cial Plan.
The county has faced some stiff opposition from land- owners over the document
- particularly the increased number of wetland areas. Members of the Concerned Landowners Legal Defence worried they would loose the ability to farm the land or build near it.
The map Lambton County of cials had found on the MNR website in 2014 when the rst draft was written, had been taken down shortly afterwards when an MNR of cial noticed the mistake.
An area of St. Clair Town- ship was of particular con- cern. A township resident whose land had been desig- nated as wetlands in the draft plan called the MNR, which created the map, to ask about why his land was considered wetland.
Lambton County of cials were never told. And that has led to a lot of concern, and a threat of a lawsuit by the Concerned Landowners Legal Defence group.
County Planner Will Ny- wening says the MNR didn’t know what he was talking about. The ministry’s most current maps didn’t show his land as wetlands.
Nywening says it is good the landowner, instead of just complaining, “went out and investigated himself” otherwise, the mistake may have never have been found.

Municipal leaders hope people hear about the new wetland mapping. The draft of cial plan is being circulated to all municipal- ities for one nal look and
While the new map
may ease some concern, the CLLD still has a list
of about 30 outstanding concerns including a map outlining agricultural areas.
What’s with the trucks ask Petrolia residents
The Independent Staff
Erma Wright is wondering why there are all kinds of heavy trucks rolling through downtown Petrolia.
Last October, Lambton County Council declared Petrolia Line restricted to trucks. After the construction of the main street was complete, the number of trucks dropped dramatically.
Residents have been no cing more trucks in Petrolia’s downtown again.
plant and the redevelopment of Florence and Egan Streets.
The retiree noticed the dump trucks last week, followed one through town and then raised her concern with the Lambton OPP.
“They’re most likely coming from the sewage treatment plant,” he says adding a large amount of earth was recently moved.
Wright says they seemed to be unsure whether the truck restrictions were still in place.
McCharles says trucks with work in town are able to use the main street under the bylaw, although it wasn’t clear why the dump trucks would not turn west to head out of town.
They are, according Mayor John Mc- Charles. But he says people may be noticing more traf c coming from two construction sites in town, the new wastewater treatment
