● This is less accurate because a business name associated with an address is more likely to
be a regulated entity name rather than a customer name in the database, but it does work
for some industries.
● Sometimes multiple customer names will appear, click on the hyperlinked CN numbers
until you see your desired address.
● Once you find the entity you are looking for, scroll down to the bottom and look under
“Permits, Registrations, or Other Authorizations.”
We took note of all of the active permits and determined that if all permits are inactive/cancelled,
then the business is likely operating without necessary permits or the business is inactive.
To find more information, such as complaints, enforcement orders, or violations, we clicked on
the hyperlinks under the column “ID Number” for the active permits.
● It will open a new window. Under “Related Information,” there is a list of clickable links
such as complaints, emergency response events, and investigations. Click on those links
to learn more about issues with that permit.
Complaint Links
● We clicked on the complaint link for a list of filed complaints.
● We took note of the date; what type of complaint: air quality, water quality, etc.; if any
violations occurred; what the complaint was (odor, etc.); and if the case is open, closed,
or referred.
Emergency Response links
● We clicked on the emergency response link for a list of filed complaints. These are rarely
hyperlinked to any other documents.
● We made a note of the frequency and the dates of these events.
Commissioners’ Actions links
● We clicked on this link to find if any enforcement orders were issued. This will also show
basic amendments to permits, which is less relevant.
● If there were enforcement orders, we clicked on the hyperlinked “order,” and a document
with information would appear.
● We took note if a penalty was charged, the date, and what statutes were violated.
Compliance Investigations links
● We clicked on this link to see how many compliance investigations the entity had.
● The number of the investigations may change permit to permit (i.e., an entity may have
four compliance investigations under the air permit and none under storm water)
● These occasionally have clickable links to more details.
