FA Women’s Championship
For the second week running, the FA Women’s Championship produced tight
results but two teams have maximum points from their opening two matches.
Newly promoted Sunderland are the team in top spot following their
2-0 victory against Blackburn Rovers at the Stadium of Light. The
Wearsiders took the lead through a Neve Herron header on seven
minutes and Emily Scarr sealed the points with the second goal
shortly afterwards.
London City Lionesses join Sunderland on six points
after they won their derby match 2-1 over Crystal Palace. Lizzie
Waldie gave Palace an early lead but the Lionesses were quickly back
on level terms when Rianna Jarrett scored from the penalty spot.
Jamie-Lee Napier scored what proved to be the winner for Melissa
Phillips’ side just before half time.
The next seven teams in the table are all on three points,
headed by Charlton Athletic who opened their campaign by
beating Coventry Utd 3-1. Ella Rutherford gave them the perfect
start with a goal after 58 seconds, with Coventry hitting back to
equalise through Mollie Green. Beth Roe restored the Addicks’ lead
just before the hour and Rutherford wrapped up the win when she
completed her double. Lucy Watson celebrates her opener
Bristol City bounced back from an opening day defeat to for Sheffield Utd against Durham
record their first win, coming from behind to defeat Lewes 2-1. The (Julian Barker).
Rookettes led at half time through a goal from Ini Umotong but a
30-yard strike from Abi Harrison brought City level after the break and Simran Jhamat slotted
home the winner from the penalty spot against her
former club.
The only team to win away from home Watford 2 (Meiwald 78, Ward 90)
over the weekend were Liverpool, who were 3-2 Liverpool 3 (Kearns 17, Dean 30,35)
