Junior Cycle (3 Years)
Coláiste Nua offers a broad range of subject choice for Junior Cycle. Literacy and Numeracy are clearly
integrated into the teaching of all subject areas. Wellbeing is written into students' timetables for
their three years of junior cycle, in the same way as traditional subjects such as English, Irish and
Maths. Wellbeing brings together three familiar areas of learning - Physical Education (PE),
Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE), Civic, Social and Political Education (CPSE) together with
the fourth pillar being Guidance/Counselling ensuring through a supportive, whole-school approach the
wellbeing and welfare of all.
To help First Years make informed decisions regarding which subjects will best suit their interests and
abilities, they get an opportunity to sample a suite of optional subjects. Decisions on subject choices are
confirmed by mid-term following input from Career Guidance and Subject teachers.
