Some people are very good at looking after
others but not themselves, whilst others live life
from a more self-orientated position. Whenever
there is an inconsistency in our capacity to relate,
a discrepancy between the way in which we
treat ourselves and the way in which we treat
others, regardless of whether our actions are
either “self-less” or “self-ish”, we are creating an
in-balance and this will have a resonance in the
world.
We are all but one part of the web, uniquely
autonomous and yet intrinsically connected,
separate and yet inseparable.
Empathy is the very fabric of connectedness.
A life without empathy is a life without
connection. A life being lived that is, to a very
great extent, disengaged from life itself. It is a
life of survival rather than a life of aliveness. A
life of coping and getting by rather than a life of
thriving and flourishing. A way of existing
where life is defended against, rather than
embraced.
