or in honor of someone, often in lieu of a gift. If the donation
honors someone, inLieu informs that person but doesn’t dis-
close the amount.
Not only does it make charitable giving easier, the app
also aims to foster community. A user can announce a do-
nation in the in-app live feed to inspire others. To further
increase giving power, users can invite others to use the
app to donate to designated organizations. For example, if
someone celebrating a birthday prefers friends and family
donate to a specific charity instead of buying gifts, that
person can send a donation invitation using inLieu.
Throughout its development Terry was adamant her
app provide a frictionless experience. “I want people to
have control over their donating environment,” she explains.
“I want people to give to whichever nonprofit they want—
anytime, anywhere.”
The app is making a real impact. From March to December
2018, inLieu enabled some 600 nonprofits to receive more

about the way I wanted to give and show support.”
During this time she conceived the idea for a mobile app

herself repeatedly wondering what to give friends who
