A Royal Show
Stars Come out for DKR Fund
Darrell K Royal is synonymous with football in Texas because of
his tenacity on and off the field. The research fund that bears
his name shares this same tenacity in the drive to find a cure for
Alzheimer’s disease.
Edith Royal, Connie Nelson On September 21st, the Darrell K Royal Research Fund for
Alzheimer’s Disease held its annual 4th & Goal Gala at the Austin
City Limits Live at The Moody Theater venue. This year’s top-billed
entertainment was provided by Charles “Chip” Esten, Chris
Carmack and Jonathan Jackson, the singing stars of the TV show
Nashville, which aired on ABC from 2012 to 2016 and then for two
more years on CMT.
Other highlights of the gala included a silent auction as well as a
lively live auction conducted by the legendary cowboy hat-wearing
bid wranglers of Heath Hale Auctioneers. Of course, UT alumnus
extraordinaire Matthew McConaughey was on hand to regale the
audience with tales of Coach Royal’s unique sense of humor and
Matt DeLorenzo, Mandy Myers, Steve Termeer
to honor his enduring legacy not only at the university but far and
wide. Just as he has motivated a number of UT players over the
years, McConaughey inspired attendees with his remarks.
The event raised more than $1 million. Grants from the DKR
Fund financially support research not only to better understand
and hopefully one day cure Alzheimer’s disease but also dementia,
traumatic brain injury and neurological injuries. The foundation also
funds caregiving support, education and awareness in the name of
Edith Royal, Coach Royal’s wife.
