They start making stuff up. They start lying!
What is interesting about this stage is that fears
can then come from sources that can’t be seen.
Things like the bogeyman and things that go
bump in the night!

My oldest child, Chris, has forgiven me, (I
think.) I've looked back on the past at some of
the practical jokes I would play on him, and it

troubles me some. Although it was funny at the
time, I'm sure to him, I was inflicting cruel and
unusual punishment.

I remember being with him on a dock at night
fishing on the coastline of Beaufort, South
Carolina. The moon was full — not a cloud in
the sky. Suddenly, a school of small fish swam
under the dock. The pattern in the water was at
least ten meters wide. You could easily see the
movement of the swimming fish in unison. I
looked down, pointed, and yelled out, "Water
monster!" I then took off in a run as if the

monster was coming after us. He screamed in
fear and followed me as fast as his little legs
could move. Alarmed by Chris' frightened
reaction, I immediately told him that I was only
