joking and that it was just a school of small fish.
He must have been twelve years old at the time,
and to this day he has no reservations in telling
that story to his friends in my presence merely
for the purpose of embarrassing me for my
child abuse tactics. At age 38, I'm not sure if he
thinks about water monsters when he's on the
ocean, but I'm certain that he will never forget
that fear I instilled in him. Today Chris is
extremely creative, and I'm sure he has thought
that if we could have made a Reality TV series
titled, "Bad Dads," I would have won an
Emmy.
It is a normal part of children’s development to
go through these different stages of fear. They
don’t need dads to force them through it.
However, what is important is that they are
transitory. As children learn to overcome these
fears, they learn that they can deal with life.
They can overcome challenges and say to
themselves, “That wasn’t so bad after all!”
As adults, though, if we are stuck with a certain
irrational fear, it may or may not be a problem.
If it is stopping us from getting what we want,
