Staying Safe in the Sun!
Why is sun safety important?
• If you don’t protect your skin in the sun
or you are in the sun too long, you can get
a sunburn
What does a sunburn look and feel like?
• A sunburn turns skin red
• A sunburn hurts
• Sometimes a sunburn can cause a blister
on your skin
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated!
• When you are active, your body produces
sweat that helps cool your body down
• You need to drink plenty of water to
stay hydrated when you are doing
activities outside
• If it is a warm or hot day, you may sweat
even more and you will need to drink more
water
What to do if you will be outside in the sun?
• Wear sunscreen
○ Preschool aged kids should have a
parent/guardian or caregiver apply and
reapply their sunscreen.
○ You should wear sunscreen when you
are doing outside activities, even on
cloudy days.
○ Sunscreen should be put on your skin
15 minutes before going outside.
○ One time is not enough if you are
outside for more than a couple of
hours! Your parent/guardian or
caregiver should help you put on more
sunscreen every 2 ½ hours when
outside and even sooner if you are
sweating, swimming or playing in the
water, or you towel off.
○ Be careful not to get sunscreen in your
eyes; it can sting!
• Protect your lips
○ Lip balm will protect your lips when you
are outside in the sun.
○ Your parent or a parent-approved
person can help you with this.
