Be a Good Sport!

As a preschooler, you are exploring new
games, sports and activities all the time. Your
playtime should be fun. This means that you
and the other people you play with should be
       good sports. Showing good sportsmanship
is important when you are young and as
you grow up when you try new sports and
       activities.

Have you ever heard the word
sportsmanship or being a good sport?
       • If you have, what does that mean to you?
       • Can you give me an example of what being
a good sport could look like?

       What is sportsmanship?
       • Fair play, respect for opponents, and polite
behavior by someone who is competing
in a sport or other competition (http://
          www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/
          sportsmanship)

       When you play:
       • You learn new skills
       • You improve the skills you already have
          learned
       • You get to play with others
       • You participate in physical activity that
helps keep your body healthy and strong

       Winning and losing
       • Be kind
       • Be honest
       • Be fair
       • Play to the best of your ability
       • Follow the rules of the game
       • Be a good team player if you are playing
a team sport or games with other kids at
home or at school. This includes things
          like:
          ○ Be kind to your teammates
          ○ Listen and show respect to your coach,
teacher, or parent who is helping you
              learn to play the game
          ○ Cheer on your team whether you are
              winning or losing
          ○ Let everyone participate in the game
