Sofa "A story told beautifully and respectfully" Lauren Townsend, Sheffield
Crucible 2018
An absorbing and highly visual exploration of Memory and 'Unmemory'
supported by Arts Council England, and in partnership with Everyman
Theatre, Cheltenham and Heartbreak Productions
The MakeShift Ensemble present ‘Sofa’ - An exploration of memory, place
and the worlds we create around us. Performed by two actors and a puppet.
The sofa is where we make new worlds as children and seek solace as adults, a
place to laugh, cry, play and discover. Join Rachel and Mark at their old family
home exploring memories of a loved one living with dementia, and the
changing perspectives they bring to those memories. The MakeShift
Ensemble, with their distinct and compelling style, aim to discover the effects
of memory and 'unmemory' on family
relationships . inspired by real life events
and experiences the piece will tell the
stories that sometimes go untold with
humour and pathos. The show includes
puppetry, object manipulation and the
most
versatile sofa in the world!
The story delves into the shared memo-
ries of a brother and sister who find themselves together once more in the
family home. Through their story we look at how shared memories both con-
nect and differ, how the imagination of our
childhoods ingrains itself deeply into our
psyche and how the memories we create
throughout life are finally turned on their
head when we encounter loved ones living
with dementia and its effect on the things
that are remembered and forgotten. We
take the idea of the sofa and examine it in
it’s role as a play thing for children, a place
for family time, a place for conversation, a place for crying, a place for
intimacy, a place to rest, a place to say good bye and a place to remember.
