Policies that Support Healthy Communities
• Listed below are some examples of effective policies that have been shown to support healthy
communities. They are provided to demonstrate the kinds of policies that local, state, or
national legislators; government agencies; and national advocacy organizations could promote
or enact to have a broad impact on public health.
• Increase the use of EBP to improve utilization of evidence based strategies in the diagnosis
and treatment of asthma.
• Develop certified asthma educators and fund them to provide comprehensive asthma
management with patients.
• Utilize medical interpreters and translators to assist with asthma education.
• Develop standards of care for asthma through electronic medical records systems.
• Implement standards of care across all partners who are involved with the care of an asthma
patient including the patient, caregiver, teachers,
workplace and PCP.
• Establish a communication plan among
community health workers, PCPs and payers.
• Gather information from managed
care organizations regarding
prescriptions written vs
prescriptions purchased for
surveillance to determine if
there is a relationship to
burden rates.
• Educate legislators
about the costs of
asthma.
• Increase the number
of asthma educators trained
to support families, schools and
PCPs.
