Additional Uniform Considerations
• Items stored in pockets should not detract from the uniform’s overall appearance;
• T-shirts or undershirts, turtlenecks, and mock turtlenecks must be a color compatible
with the ranger uniform when visible. T-shirts and turtlenecks in black, dark navy blue,
white, grays, and natural greens are acceptable;
• Uniforms are incomplete without badges and name bars. Each ranger will be issued a
minimum of three badges and three name bars—one for the uniform shirt, one for
jackets, and one for outerwear;
• Rangers may not wear duty belts (firearms) without a complete uniform;
• Uniform standards or deviations from this policy for specialized assignments such as
bike, firearm, and defensive tactics instruction are determined by the ranger manager and
PTO assignments;
• When on assignment, rangers must wear the standard, approved uniform for the
assignment. Uniform pieces from various assignments may not be combined; and
• Rangers must, at a minimum, visibly display a badge and appropriate agency
identification (patches or logo) when carrying a firearm.
Shirts:
• All buttons are to be buttoned with particular attention placed on the pocket and sleeve-
vent buttons. The top button of the shirt may be left unfastened;
• Sleeves on a long-sleeve shirt must never be rolled up when public contact is likely;
• There should be no spread between the front buttons when sitting; otherwise, the shirt is
too tight;
• Shirts must always be tucked in so the front is smooth. A straight vertical line should be
maintained through the shirt buttons, belt buckle, and fly;
• Pens and pencils must not visibly protrude more than one (1) inch from pocket tops; and
• T-shirts should not be visible under shirts at the sleeves.
Pants / Shorts:
• Uniform pants style and color (green) must be approved by the ranger manager (typically
tactical or cargo-style pants);
• Rangers are authorized to wear shorts when on patrol. Shorts must be of approved length and
style and fall just above the knee. All equipment required to be on the duty belt must be carried
when shorts are worn. Rangers wearing shorts on patrol are required to have a pair of standard
uniform pants readily available;
• During periods of high fire danger or when otherwise approved by the ranger manager,
rangers may wear Nomex fire pants in place of standard uniform pants; and
• Other non-standard pants may be authorized for special duties (i.e., bike or horse
patrol) and shall be worn only while performing those duties.
