Reports Notification
Incident Reports
Incident reports are used to document ranger involvement with emergency fire or medical
incidents, serious law enforcement incidents, or unusual occurrences on Open Space and
Mountain Parks (OSMP) properties. Incident reports are to be completed and submitted to the
ranger services supervisor, operations supervisors, lead rangers and division manager within 24
hours after an incident is terminated. Incidents involving injuries or damage to city property
must be sent to risk management.
When possible, incident reports should be completed before the end of each shift on the day the
incident happens. Reports should be completed for the following incidents:
• Discharging a firearm;
• Any use of force to include handcuffing detained suspects;
• Any emergency response mode conducted;
• Most emergency responses whether or not rangers respond in emergency mode,
regardless of notification means, location, and jurisdiction;
• Any law enforcement incident requiring another agency’s assistance;
• Large parties or other serious incidents whether or not assistance is required;
• Unusual occurrences requiring documentation;
• Wildlife incidents requiring ranger responses; and
• Any incident that results in damage to OSMP properties.
Notifying Superiors
Some incidents required notifying an operations supervisor immediately. In general, incidents
that receive widespread media coverage, with continuing or follow-up coverage, should be
brought to an operation supervisor’s attention. As a result, high-ranking department personnel
should be advised of the situation and assume media relations responsibilities. An operations
