Officer/Ranger Responsibilities
On-scene or involved rangers have the following responsibilities immediately following critical
incidents:
• Scene safety;
• Ensuring medical care is rendered to injured person(s);
• Apprehending suspect(s) if necessary;
• Protecting the scene, securing evidence and witnesses; and
• Immediately notifying investigating agency(s) and the on-duty operations supervisor.
On-Duty Operations Supervisor Responsibilities
Supervisors and the responding and/or investigating agency(s) will handle most supervisorial duties
dealing with actual critical incident scenes. The on-duty operations supervisor or designee will:
• Check on and keep track of rangers involved in the incident or at the incident’s location;
• Notify the OSMP Department director; and
• Assure (with the investigating agency’s cooperation) the involved rangers’ needs are met,
including medical care, notifying family members, and an introduction later, as needed, to
the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
Department Notification
The OSMP Department director or his or her designee(s) will brief department members concerning
incidents so rumors are kept to a minimum. Department notifications will be made in a timely
manner to dispel concerns and prevent fellow department members from finding out through the
media.
Public Information
Critical incidents generate a great deal of public and media interest. To avoid conflicts with the
investigating agency, no OSMP Department ranger shall issue any information concerning a critical
incident to a member of the media or the general public without first receiving approval from the
investigating agency’s public information officer.
Administrative Leave
Whenever rangers are involved in critical incidents or when it would be in their (or the
department’s) best interests, rangers will be placed on administrative and/or “light duty” until such
time a review is completed to the OSMP Department director’s, operations supervisor’s and/or the
investigating agency chief officer’s satisfaction.
Support Referral
