398 CHRIST'S TEACHINGS, MIRA ES AND CHUR
Peter loved our Lord very dearly and he could not bear to hear Him talk about su ering and dying. He began to argue with our Savior, and said, "Lord, be it far from Thee that this should happen unto Thee.''
Jesus was disappointed in Peter for being so slow to learn, and He turned round to him and said very sternly, ''Go behind Me, Satan; thou art a scandal unto Me, because thou savorest not the things that are of God, but the things that are of men.''
Turning to the people, Jesus said, ''If any man ll come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me, for he that will save his life shall lose it, and he that shall lose his life for My sake sha nd it. For what doth it pro t a man if he gain the whole world and su er the loss of his own soul, or what exchange shall a man give for his soul?''
Another day, the mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and told Him that she had a favor to ask of Him. He said to her, " Vhat wilt thou?'' She answered, ''Say that these, my two sons, may sit, the one on Thy right hand and the other on Thy left in Thy Kingdom.''
Knowing that James and John had told their mother to ask this great favor of Him, Jesus turned to them and said, "You know not what you ask. Can you drink the chalice that I shall drink?"
Without a moment's hesitation, they answered, "We can.'' Jesus said, ''My chalice indeed you shall drink, but to sit on My right or left hand is not Mine to give you, but to them for whom it is prepared by My Father.''
