CHRIST  'HE FRIEND OF THE POOR AND THE SICK 431 Nai , they met a funeral procession. The body of a young man was being carried out. He had been the only son of his mother, who was a widow. Many peo­ ple of the city were accompanying the body to the grave.
Going up to the mother, Jesus said to her, "Weep not.'' Then turning, He touched the bier upon which the body was being carried, and those who carried it stood still. Jesus said, ''Young man, I say to thee, a se." At once the dead man sat up and began to speak and Jesus gave him to his mother. Great fear came upon all those who beheld this miracle. They glori ed God, saying, "A great prophet is risen up among us, and God hath visited His people.''
The daughter of Jairus, the ruler of the synagogue The

His feet, he begged Him to come to his house and cure
his daughter.
Jesus started at once for the house of Jairus, but the people crowded around Him and His progress through the streets was very slow. They had scarcely gone halfway when a messenger came to Jairus, saying to
him, ''Thy daughter is dead. Why dost thou trouble the Master any further7''
But Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, ''Fear not. Only believe and she shall be safe."
