One thing Houston-based home and design mecca FOUND
knows how to do is to create the perfect vignette. By definition,
a vignette is defined as a small decorative design or picture so
placed; a brief scene. And it is also one of FOUND’s absolute
favorite spaces to create. We spoke to Ruth Davis, owner of
FOUND, known for creating landscapes and tasteful vignettes
in and around the home. Ruth shared her views on what makes
a vignette special and her tips on creating the perfect vignette
inside your home.
l START WITH THE BASE.
A beautiful commode or bedside table, for example, always
elevates objects and serves as the platform for your vignette.
From here you can mix things up and create a slight contrast.
l GROUP OBJECTS OF THE SAME COLOR.
Colors affect our emotions, so depending on the mood we are
aiming to create in the room, we try to play with colors that
pop or offset the dominant surrounding color.
l ADD SOMETHING ORGANIC AND/OR ALIVE.
A plant or your favorite flower always adds both life and a pop
of color to any vignette. A small touch of nature also keeps the Ruth Davis, owner of FOUND
room fresh and adds life to the room. Don’t be afraid to use cut conversation starter, your dining room backdrop or anywhere
greenery from your yard. you would love to showcase something special. Take a picture of

what you’ve missed or might need to change.
Placing your art piece or your objects slightly off-center
maximizes impact, is less expected and creates interest. l USE PINTEREST FOR INSPIRATION.
l ADD A STACK OF BOOKS. Pinterest is a great design resource and offers endless
inspiration.
We often like to use books with the same color spine. Books
of similar color or size can maximize impact and add a little
drama.
l CONSIDER SYMMETRY.
Experiment with asymmetrical balance. Asymmetry tends to
be more interesting and eclectic.
l GO BIG OR GO HOME.
Do not be afraid to use one large object. It is more dramatic to
have one fabulous piece than a lot of smaller objects.
l MIX IT UP.
Combine a variety of patterns, textures, materials and colors
to create interest. One thing we love doing is mixing high
and low to create environments that both inspire and aspire.
Our vignettes may have a found object next to a piece of
contemporary sculpture.
l THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.
A vignette should make your home feel special or look more
polished. It can be a focal point for an art piece you love, a
