Components of a modern learning ecosystem

        The technological Infrastructure

The technological infrastructure is the foundation to support a future learning ecosystem (Walcutt and Schatz 2019).

“Instructional systems, interoperability standards, cross-platform data integration, and centralized software services

form the sinews and nerves that transform today’s stovepipe, staccato learning episode into a holistic lifelong
experience.” (Walcutt and Schatz., 2019). Our institution uses an accessible Learning Management system (LMS) for

communication, assessments, and learning. To create more individualized learning and to improve learning for
students, we should incorporate more data analytics. Keller (2018) supported the adoption of data analytics and more

specific xAPI data, to analyse learner behaviour patterns. Collecting this type of data, integrated with the LMS can
assist learning design professionals to “design for data” and “design from data” to inform future improvements in

learning design components and systems. Analysing which resources are accessed (content), the frequency of access,
and various learner activities assist learning design improvements. These may include content improvements and/or

the appropriate selection of various technology tools for learning. A modern learning ecosystem includes the
integration of technology tools for learning. Dr. Ruben Puentedura SANMR model (Romrell et. al, 2014) highlights how

we can evaluate the integration of technology in our teaching and learning process. This is a useful model to implement
as part of our technological infrastructure. Technological infrastructure is useless if people do not use it or interact

with it. The implementation of technology requires the contributions of skilful people.
