Appreciation for financial support given and congratulation for the successful services rented to the
Faculty of Engineering
From Dr. B. Janarthanan (Chairman of the Studentship and Awards Committee of the Faculty of Engineering): First
of all, I would like to convey my heartiest congratulations and appreciation for your timely contribution and
continuous support to the development of our faculty, Faculty of Engineering, in all possible ways. One significant
contribution is studentships, which is to financially support ten Tamil engineering students following their
undergraduate course in our faculty. This year onwards this studentship amount has been increased to Rupees 4000
from Rupees 3000 per student per month (total of 480,000 Rupees per year) by the Tamil Engineering Foundation
of Australia (TEF). This increased studentship is a massive help for those ten students in their undergraduate studies,
especially with increased living expenses. In addition to engineering students, the TEF also has extended it support
to ten other financially disadvantaged Tamil students, following their courses in different faculties at the University
of Jaffna.
The Gold Medal award for the field top in the Department of Civil Engineering with the name of Late Professor A
Thurairajah, which was established with the support of the TEF has been continuously awarded for qualified
students. For this 800,000 Rupees is placed in fixed deposit and interest is used for preparing the Gold Medal every
year. This is established as a lifelong award from the Faculty. This Gold medal inevitably creates positive competition
in the Department of Civil Engineering.
From Dr. B. Ketheesan (Senior Treasurer of the Engineering Student Union of the Faculty of Engineering): On behalf
of Faculty of Engineering, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the donations the TEF has made for
Engineering Students’ Union (ESU). During the past seven years of the Faculty of Engineering, the TEF has donated
100 Nos of drawing tool kits (worth of about 550,000 Rupees) and 75 bicycles (worth of about 1,200,000 Rupees)
to first year Engineering undergraduate students. Apparently, supporting needy students is a great way to help them
achieve their career goals by making their life much easier.
Another remarkable contribution by TEF was the donation of 388,570 Rupees to organize “Prof A. Thurairajah
Memorial Quiz Competition”. The primary purpose of this event was to motivate school children (Grade 10, 11
students) to pursue their education in STEM fields. This event was a great success with the participation of school
students from Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Mannar, Vavuniya, Batticaloa and Trincomalee districts. This was an
