Inspections out in the Hill-country. We would have a
picnic by a stream while he went for his inspections.
Acca was teaching at St.Scholasticas, Kandy in the late
1940’s, and hers was the first wedding in the family.
Appa’s next promotion as Superintendent of
Telecommunications took us to Colombo. We had the
best place to live - Mount Lavinia. We had a residence
near the sea on Siripala Road. Since my sister’s
husband was working in Colombo, the newlyweds
moved to Sumanarama Road, Mt. Lavinia, which was
near us.
We as siblings sang together, played badminton on our
front lawn in Mount Lavinia where Appa was posted
to next. In Colombo, Acca had her dream come true
when she went to Maharagama Teacher Training
College!. Thereafter, she had her first son Chitta at
Ratnam’s Hospital, in 1953. I remember while studying
at Presbyterian Girls School, Dehiwela, when my
brother-in-law ‘Athan’ took me to the Hospital to see
the new-born! Acca’s other four children were born in
short order in 1954, 1956, 1958 and 1965 – in all two boys
and three girls. It was a joy for me to continue to
interact with them as they grew up and our love has
endured.
After studying at Methodist College, Colombo, I went to
Peradeniya University, and returned to Colombo to
start teaching, and married before migrating to UK
(in 1967) with my eldest son.
Life in Colombo was varied and event-filled to say the
least.
