The last days of the war – Independence (1948) was
celebrated when we were in Kandy. Our earliest
memories of living with Sinhalese Buddhists takes me
back to when my sister made great friends from all
communities. Our brother Siva moved to U.K (in 1958)
and I joined him later (in 1966) with my family, while
their destination was Sydney in 1984.
In UK, my skills as an educator and musician became
important in my career life, and Acca was an early
influence in getting me started along this path. It was
Acca who took me to Saiva Mangaiyar Kalagam, to
learn and qualify in completing the Teacher’s Grade in
Vocal and Violin Music.
The British teachers gained an insight from our
Heritage when I taught in UK. School choirs Sang to
the Queen for the Jubilee celebrations.
My bond with my sister continues on with her
children.
You know the rest in my Eulogy to my sister!
Strangely, the inter-racial amity was broken by the
race riots (of 1958 and 1983), which my sister speaks of
in her Tamil interview: ‘Conversation with Mrs
Mylvaganam’ - https://youtu.be/KgPktEzr8MQ
