Tribute to Our Aunt - Tilaka Sinnammah
Thilaka Sinnammah, as Mrs. Mylvaganam was
affectionately referred to by us, was our father
Kanagaratnam’s youngest brother's wife.
Our memories go way back to the Mount Lavinia years,
before the 1958 riots when both our families lived not too far
from each other, and to our trips to Kalutara to Chelliah
Patta's (our father’s maternal uncle) house. After the riots
in 1958, Sinnammah was briefly in Sandilipay, Jaffna and
we were in Tellippalai, Jaffna. Sinnammah moved back to
Colombo and we lived in Manipay, Jaffna. Nevertheless,
distance was no barrier and we spent many wonderful
holidays together. Later we moved to Talangama, just
outside Colombo, whilst Sithappah, Sinnammah and family
were living close by in Castle St., Borella, and our ties
continued to strengthen further.
Sinnammah was greatly admired by all of us. Her wit and
charm were unmatched. She was our trendy young aunt.
Her style and hospitality will always be remembered. Our
Ammah and Sinnammah would get together and make
mouth-watering dishes.
Sinnammah, being our youngest aunt, was someone we older
girls were able to relate to when we were teenagers. We
fondly recall the times we would borrow her sarees to wear
for events when we needed something trendy.
Two of us (Dhaksha and Saro) had the good fortune of
visiting Sinnammah in Sydney last year and recapturing
some nostalgic memories of days when we were growing up.
Sinnammah, you are with us no more, but we will cherish
your memories always.
May Your Soul Rest in Peace.
