THE VOCABULARY: refer to the numbers above
1. The horizon line (H): It is the eye-level line - your eye is always level with this line, the line that
separates the earth from the sky. The position of the horizon line determines the type, meaning
and mood of the composition.

A high horizon A low horizon
Remember that all receding lines above the horizon line slant
down towards it, while the receding lines below the horizon
line slant up towards it.
2. The vanishing point (VP):
This is a point found on the horizon line where all converging
lines meet and objects in the distance “disappear." It is the point that you draw all converging lines
from and to. This point may be a visible point on the horizon line (as in the street scene below), or
it can be an imaginary point at which the converging lines would meet - if they were extended
behind the barrier (as in the room scene), or if they were extended beyond the limits of the picture.
3. Converging lines: Two or more lines that eventually meet at the
vanishing point.
4. Parallel lines: Two straight lines the same distance apart their
entire length. They never meet. These lines normally run
horizontally and do not extend towards the vanishing point.
5. Progressively diminishing natural/architectural details: Objects
within the landscape/picture diminish in size and height the
further they recede into the background. A converging line
determines the progression in the reduction in size of these
objects, and therefore the change remains constant and does
not vary.
AND Foreshortening: a visual device of showing perspective
within an irregular shape like the human body. The object is After ANDREA MANTEGNA’S, The Dead
