Painting can be fun and rewarding. To achieve in the
discipline it requires dedication, time and hard work.
Painting is a combination of ideas, techniques and
materials. Geoffrey Armstrong, a South African artist
once said, “If you cannot draw, you cannot paint”. I0

To an illustrator, painting is a discipline that requires
skill. It takes many years of practicing drawing, learning 5 7
about the different painting techniques and
experimenting with different media to become a
successful painter. 1
In our world today, we seem to be part of the “want it
now” generation. If we want entertainment we switch on
a TV and we are instantly entertained. If we are hungry,
we can phone a number and have a fully cooked
delicious meal delivered to our table within 45 minutes.

In the discipline of painting, there are no short cuts! If
you want to become a recognised painter you have to be
willing to make the sacrifice and put in the amount of
time and effort that is required.
There are two words, which you need to understand.
The first word is technique. Technique is the knowledge BRUSH SIZES & TYPES
and way in which the illustrator uses his/her equipment.
You will be learning about the different painting 1 - Pure sable
techniques of impasto, wash, pointillism and wax resist.
Techniques are skills that can be learnt. The second 5 - Blended hair
word is style. Style means the designer’s special way of 7 - Pure sable, one
expression. Their style is defined by their personality – stroke, flat
brush
therefore the style of one designer is different to the
style of another designer. The ‘style’ of a designer is the 9, 10 - Wash or sky
brushes,
way in which he/she naturally chooses to do the various squirrel hair
techniques with their specific equipment.
