             having failed to fittingly eulogize Shaul, the decree [of famine] would
             have been rescinded but since there was the sin of not having eu-
             logized Shaul properly, they did not have the power to repulse the
             decree and it was fulfilled in David’s time. The medrash concludes,
             “Rabbi Berachiah said of them, ‘He gives the weary strength.’ (Yesha-
             yah 40:29)

             It is forbidden for the daughter to volunteer herself for defilement,
5 even in order to save her parents from insanity and suicide.

    Is a Jewish Daughter Allowed to Sin with Pure

           Motivation?

Question: An informer is ready to convey military secrets of the Jew-
ish people to their enemy and the only way to trap him is by tempting
him with forbidden relations. A young woman has volunteered to
contact him by telephone and agree to give him his desire. After they
met she agreed to let him defile her so that he should grow weak and
fall asleep, enabling him to be captured. Was she allowed to do this?

  Response: The Beis Shmuel writes (Even Ha’ezer, 178:4),“A wom-
an who committed adultery willingly in order to save lives – as was
the case with Esther and Achashverosh – becomes forbidden to her
husband, since she had relations willingly.” The Chochmas Shlomo
comments on this, “Now the case of Yael, wife of Chever Hakeini,
apparently demonstrates the opposite, for Scripture states explicitly
and it is also written in maseches Nazir (23b) that Sisra had repeated
relations with her, yet nowhere do we find that she became forbidden
to her husband. On the contrary, the precise wording that Devorah
picked for her song, where she said, “Of the women in the tent, Yael
