  Documentation:

     IDs, Rap Sheets,
and Online Reputations

You have a name and personal history, but most recently
you’ve been known primarily by your prison number. You’ve
also developed a recent incarceration history, which is probably
not widely known outside the prison walls, unless you behaved badly.
Without that number, you could easily get lost in the system. Even your
family and closest friends would have difficulty locating you without
knowing your number.

Whether you think it’s fair or not, your recent incarceration experi-
ence is a big red flag for those on the outside who might otherwise be
receptive to you. One of your major tasks is to overcome that red flag
by assuring people that you are now a different person who is both re-
sponsible and trustworthy.

Now that you’re released and ostensibly free, no one really wants
to know your prison number, including yourself. Instead, many people
and institutions want to know the following personal identifiers, which
frequently pop up on applications and serve as security screening ques-
tions for verifying your identity:

QQ Who are you – your name? QQ What’s your address?
QQ What’s your Social Security QQ What’s your telephone

  number? number?
