PERIVALE
                                  TH
            WEDNESDAY APRIL 29 1998
The duty officer’s log at Vauxhall Cross had shown no incidents for the night Anne was killed and
formal enquiries at Metropolitan Police had revealed no incident that could be remotely concerned
with Anne or a taxi but something had obviously made her change her mind and return to pick up
her car when she was less than three miles from home. It didn’t make sense.

Detective Sergeant Earl had been a driver in the Armed Response Unit prior to transfer to the plain-
clothes division and he had been making quite enquiries on my behalf.

He rang me very early and said he would be round to pick me up shortly.

‘Three of my ex colleagues from the AR unit went to an incident on the night in question which I
think you will find interesting. I know it goes without saying but their jobs would be on the line if
what they will tell you ever got back to their superiors.’

I sat in the back of the BMW with Ray, the team’s observer. Arnie was the driver and Alec in the
            passenger seat was the operator.

‘If we get a call then we will have to push you out a bit smartish.’ Arnie informed me. ‘Ray was the
controller for the incident; he will take you through what happened.’ He continued.

‘We had a call at twenty five to nine approximately to say that MP Control had received a code red

call from MI6 that one of their agents was being tailed.’ Ray began. ‘Apparently the agent was a
female and she was in a black cab. A traffic car eventually got behind them and Alec had talk
through with them. He arranged for the Traffic car overtake and to blue light them and the car
pulled over. We pulled up right alongside. The vehicle was carrying American Embassy plates. Me
and Alec then rushed to the car and I pulled open the driver’s door and let them have a good view
of my Heckler and Koch. There were two people in the car, a male who, even though he was sat in
the driver’s seat was clearly very well built and over six feet tall and a young woman about twenty
            five years old.’

‘Can you describe what they looked like?’ I asked.

‘Well as I say, the guy was pretty big, looked Mexican or South American at least and was wearing a
huge gold signet ring. The girl was South American, absolutely gorgeous. She wore blue slacks a
light blue sweater and what I can only describe as a blue bakers cap.’

‘What about the woman in the taxi?’

‘One of the Traffic Officers escorted her from the taxi and as she looked into the car she just said
“You” as if in surprise. And then after a couple of seconds,” you were on the stretcher.”’

‘And this was to the girl in the car?’

            ‘Yes,’
