I tried not to show my surprise, not many know Mex’s full name.

‘Yes, well I would like to know what he did, what he was responsible for, when he was based in
            Langley.’

‘He was in the Directorate of Support as a Senior Facilities Management Officer he chiefly dealt
            with external finance support.’

This time I could not hide my surprise. ‘Is that the sort of intelligence you carry in your head these
            days?’

Oliver smiled. ‘Not really, it is just that we have held several meetings recently and I happen to
remember that from the briefing sheets.’

The knowledge that he was responsible for external finance support confirmed for me that Mex

had been the one at Langley pulling strings to employ Warner.

‘I have a feeling that if I was to tell you my suspicion it would go down like the proverbial lead
            balloon.’

‘You suspect Mex of being a double?’

I nodded agreement. ‘Was that what your recent meetings have been about?’

‘I presume we are safe to talk in here?’ Oliver asked.

‘Safer than the Tate.’ I replied.

‘Or the whispering gallery.’ Oliver countered. ‘OK. The FBI has been keeping him under very close
observation for some time. They suspect he is working for Russia. We expected him to be lifted
before now so I guess the FBI does not think they have a watertight case yet. We have had to keep
our distance, do not want to get in the Feds way, but what we have discovered is that several
million dollars were paid by Moscow into a private bank and Mex transferred it somewhere, where
we don’t know. As I say, we have to keep our distance.’

            ‘Who knows about this?’

             ‘Us and 6.’

            ‘Does Mcluskey know?’

‘No. It was thought that as the Cottage, well you really, work closely with him you might
accidentally spook him if you knew about the suspicions so George has been kept in the dark.’

‘Do people think I am such an amateur I would not be able to conceal this knowledge?’

‘Well I certainly do not which is why I am telling you now old boy.’
