‘‘Do you have The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz af n?’ He asked,’ I cannot find it on the
shelves. I am looking for the original Spanish version.’ he added.

‘Just one moment and I will check.’ The girl looked through her computer. ‘Yes we do have it but it
has been out on loan and has only just been returned. If you would care to wait I will fetch it for
            you.’

Mex breathed a quite sigh of relief, the contact was correct.

The girl returned and Mex made his way back to the bookshelves and retrieved the envelope.

                                                          *****

This was the first occasion, since he had transferred the money across to Warner Global Ventures
that he had needed to visit the TA Darrow bank. Mex carried the identity documents of Edward
Alladyce, which he produced to the young man when requested.

‘That is all in order, Mr. Alladyce. Now, how may I help you?’

‘I wish to withdraw the total balance. I am sure you need notification of such a large withdrawal so
if you could give me a date when that is possible I will return.’

The young man regarded his computer screen for a while.

‘Have you any idea what the balance should be?’

‘Around six and a quarter million dollars US. Why is there a problem with the balance?’

The young man closed down his computer and stood up. ‘I wonder if you would mind waiting a
moment, I just need to check something with the manager.’

Damn bank can’t raise the money, Mex thought to himself. Better not be going to the wall.

The young man returned. ‘Would you mind coming with me to the manager’s office Mr. Alladyce?’

‘What’s the problem? Have you lost my damn money?’

‘I am sure Mr. Blair will be able to sort everything out.’

The manager rose to greet him. ‘Ah, Mr Alladyce, there seems to be a discrepancy on your
            account.’

‘Discrepancy? What kind of discrepancy?’ Mex was starting to get aggravated.

‘You told Mr Bright you thought the balance should be around six and a quarter million dollars.’

‘That’s right and now I wish to withdraw it in cash. What is the goddam problem?’

The problem, Mr Alladyce, is that is the amount you transferred two days ago to the account of
            Stepan Chernetsky in New York.’
